FILM: THE MOON INSIDE YOU
With humour and self-irony, this documentary approaches menstruation with personal
and collective references, challenging our ideas of womanhood- followed by a 20 minute discussion with Rachael Hertogs and Kylie Patnak

Like many other women, Diana has been suffering problematic periods for years. With every new cycle, the same question arises: "Why the pain and annoyance if I am supposed to be healthy?". Her initial innocent curiosity sparks off an emotional voyage to the very roots of femininity and life. Moon inside you is a fresh look at a taboo that defines the political and social reality of both women and men in a more profound way than society might be willing to admit. Facing the menstrual etiquette with doses of humour and self-irony, the documentary approaches the subject through both personal and collective references, thus challenging our preconceived ideas of womanhood.

Kylie Pattnaik is passionate about supporting and empowering mothers in their journey through pregnancy and into motherhood.

In addition to her training as a Holistic Birth Support Partner, she has specialist skills and experience in working with families who have children with complex needs, communication impairment and feeding difficulties. The training Kylie has taken to become a Doula has encompassed workshops with internationally recognised birthing professionals including Michel Odent, Jean Sutton, Penny Simkin and Pam England. In addition, she has studied with Birthing Wisdom in South Devon. Kylie is also a Reiki Master, Breathwork Practitioner and certified teacher of the work of Louise L Hay. Kylie is a Doula UK's Regional Rep for Cornwall & Devon.

Life transitions such as Pregnancy and Birth bring great potential for growth and transformation. As we prepare to cross the threshold of parenthood, all sorts of changes and challenges are taking place. It can be a time of excitement and joy, feeling blessed and open, but also of confusion, fear, anxiety and loss, and sometimes deep loneliness. You may be worried about the pending birth, connecting with the baby, being a good parent or feeling anxious from a previous birth etc.

Creating your own vision for how you see birth right now can help you connect with your fears, feelings, hopes and wishes. Using creativity (and the right side of the brain) during this process can help provide clarity, understanding and connection to your inner wisdom. Your artistic ability is not important, the process of engaging with the right brain helps you go within and explore what may be going on for you. Experience a gentle, intuitive way to deal with your thoughts, feelings, fears, challenges, hopes and wishes around birth and parenthood...and create your own unique vision for birth.

HELEN YEOMANS

Come and sing together in harmony with other mothers. Enriching for you and soothing for the babies - it's magic! No experience required. Preceded by an informal performance
by some of the mothers (with babies)

When Helen Yeomans joined a local choir after the birth of her 2nd child, a whole new world of singing opened up for her. After the birth of her 3rd child, Helen vowed that as soon as she was at playgroup she would start a singing group for mothers and babies. The group quickly took off, meeting in her living room every Tuesday morning, as it still does today. She has a permanent waiting list, yet has decided to keep the group small and intimate. Thula Mama songs are sung 'a capella' using only the human voice. This is soothing and calming for babies, grounding and confidence-building for mothers.

DOULAS/BIRTH COMPANIONS
SONYA ROWLAND, KEELEY FARRINGDON AND BECKY SHERWOOD

How they can support women or couples during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

Sonya Rowlands says: "I did my Doula training with Olivia Seck of Birthing Wisdom 5 yrs ago. This training is the most comprehensive and holistic training available in the UK.

I have also supported at Natural Active Birth classes and I am a fully qualified Massage and Aromatherapist. I live in Buckfastleigh with my husband and our 4 children. We have 2 boys and 2 girls, and all of my births have been different. We also had a Doula supporting us with our last birth, which was a wonderfully comforting experience even though we had given birth 3 times before.
I decided that I would like to work as a Doula partly because of my own experiences of pregnancy and birth and partly because I feel that woman have the right to regain the power to do things their way, with more control over their own experiences whilst feeling supported enough to make their own choices.

Becky Sherwood is a trained homoeopathist and has recently trained with Birthing Wisdom as a doula and holistic childbirth educator.

Keeley Farringdon completed her doula training with Birthing Wisdom in July of 2006 and says: ''The training showed me what deep inner resources I already had; what deep inner resources all women have available to them if they are guided in where & how to look, and if they feel loved and supported in that process.

I learnt that in many ways the lessons we learn about and through birth are lessons for life, both for ourselves as Doulas & the couples we work with. In essence the training reminds me of the difference between giving a starving family a fish or the means to catch their own fish! We certainly learnt a lot about the work that is of practical use, but where I personally felt the most value lie, was in what we learnt about how to learn; how to listen to and respond sensitively and with respect to ourselves, to the women we work with, to birth and to life. Through this, I feel ready and inspired to meet whatever life as a Doula brings.''

BIRTHING WISDOM NETWORKING EVENT
OLIVIA SECK

Would you like to join others to create a new culture of Birth and parenting in your area? To join or start a group, network or project to benefit parents or birth professionals? Come and meet up with like minded people. Children welcome.

Research has shown the importance of the right kind of preparation and support in preventing complication and interventions in childbirth and parenthood. This preparation needs to go beyond the intellectual knowledge or body based exercise offered by most antenatal preparation classes. It needs to include an emotional and mental preparation as well as look at the overall social and cultural climate the women and couples are birthing and raising their children into.

In other words what is needed is a holistic approach in preparation as well as care during the childbearing year. Whether we are midwives, childbirth educators, doulas, health visitors or complementary therapist, mothers or fathers, we all have the same aim, the well-being of families and our world. Birthing Wisdom is creating a focus point where families and professionals can come together to explore ways to create a new culture of birth and parenting in their local area - moving away from the prevalent climate of fear and social fragmentation towards embodied presence, love and connectedness, the corner stones of positive birth and parenting experiences.

BIRTHDANCE - BELLY DANCE FOR PREGNANCY AND BIRTH
FIONA WILLIS

Belly dance is an ancient birthing dance, its movements mirroring a labouring woman, strengthening and preparing the body for birth.

Many of the moves in belly dance relate to those that a woman makes during birthing, and are an excellent way to gently and sensuously work those important muscles and train them for the work of birth.

Come and explore this ancient dance and discover the sensuous roots of feminine power and strength.

Belly dancing whilst pregnant is excellent exercise and highly enjoyable as well as being a traditional way in the Middle East to prepare for birth. Dancing in the postnatal period can help to regain strength and tone in the abdomen and pelvic floor as well as being a great way of honouring the curves of the new mother.

Fiona Willis love of belly dance began when she started learning Raqs Sharqi (traditional Egyptian dance) in 1992, and she has been dancing ever since! Fiona has studied dancing from various Middle Eastern cultures and continues to learn with esteemed dance and teachers such as Amel Tafsout.

Whilst studying for her Shiatsu in maternity care post graduate diploma, Fiona researched the history of this ancient dance in depth and discovered that it's roots lie in preparing a woman for childbirth. In Middle Eastern cultures, women traditionally danced for themselves and each other, and only in relatively recent times has the dance become associated with performance and voyeurism. Traditionally the dance was a way for women to celebrate and enhance their fertility as the movements strengthen the abdomen and pelvic area. A lot of the movements mimic those made during labour and birth and so were a way of sharing birthing wisdom between generations. Fiona offers belly dance as birth dance classes for pregnant women as a way of connecting with this traditional wisdom of birth preparation.
