Our projects in the UK

“The Hubs”

Birthing Wisdom has been involved in the field of birth and parenting for over 20 years now and has been continuously working with different ways to minimize trauma and create solid foundations for positive experiences of birth and early parenting for the whole family. We are now looking to set up pilot Hubs in the UK where the wisdom gained over this period can be offered to families of all financial status.
Hubs are central points, physical as well as virtual, where women and men can access information, resources and holistic support and services, as well as be part of a like minded community during the crucial period from conception to 9 months after the birth.
Depending on the local needs and the skills and orientation of the Birthing Wisdom team, holistic services offered could include drop in info sessions, holistic childbirth education classes, doula support for birth and the postnatal period, complementary therapies, Birth story circles and Birth trauma healing, pregnancy and new mothers support groups, breastfeeding café, counselling including bereavement counselling .
We aim to also offer services specifically for fathers, such as expectant dads sessions, fathers support groups, counselling and coaching men through the transition into fatherhood.
The money raised from the Firewalk and other fundraising events will fund the setting up and the running of the first Hubs for a 6 months period from February 2012.

The Birth Trauma Healing Fund

“As many as 200,000 UK women may feel traumatised by childbirth and develop some of the symptoms of PTSD.” Birth Trauma Association
Many fathers also need support and healing after witnessing a traumatic birth. Not forgetting those babies whose whole childhood can be affected by their experiences of emotional andphysical trauma during their birth. What a way to start family life together!
BW Outreach is raising funds to train birth practitioners to work with birth trauma as well as provide a fund for healing women / men and babies suffering from birth trauma.

BWO is raising funds for ABC to build a Birth House for the Traditional Midwives of Kafoutine. At the moment most homebirths attended by traditional midwives occur in the bathing area behind a house on a piece of fabric spread on the ground. Once the baby is born, the mother & child are brought back into the home where they remain for one week beforerejoining the community in outdoor activities. The traditional midwives have made clear that this is not ideal and expressed their need for a place to give birth that is clean, warm and close to their homes.
The African Birth Collective is financially sponsoring this easily achievable project. With your donations they will construct an earthen structure using local traditional building methods. This enclosed space will provide the women a centralized location for maternal care and a clean, safe place for women to have their babies.
